Built

The design of Galaxy Express is very close to that of SIII, the thickness is a little more, and the corners are more rounded though. It has dimensions of 133 x 69 x 9 mm, and weighs 120 grams.

The front of the device is a 4.5 inch display, below which are three keys. At the top, it has a 3.5 mm audio jack, on the right is the power button, on the left is the volume rocker, and the microUSB port is present at the bottom. The backside has a 5MP camera, the GALAXY logo, and a single speaker at the bottom.

The built of the device is similar to any other Samsung device. It’s mostly plastic, keeping it lightweight, but is quite durable.

Display

The device has a 4.5 inch Super AMOLED Plus WVGA capacitive touchscreen display, with a screen resolution of 480×800 pixels. It supports 16 million colors, and provides a pixel density 207 ppi. While Super AMOLED screen is impressive, the average screen resolution is a bit disappointing.

Hardware

Galaxy Express is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, alongwith an Adreno 225 GPU, and 1 GB RAM.

Software

Galaxy Express runs on Android 4.0 Jelly Bean OS. The interface is TouchWiz Nature UX, so you’ll find it similar to SIII and Note II. Almost all the features are typically Samsung. There aren’t any major extra features. You should be familiar with the interface, if not Samsung provides pop-up tutorials, which are helpful for new users, but may get annoying for the experienced users. Otherwise, the overall experience is pleasant.

Camera

Galaxy Express has a 5MP camera, with LED flash, auto focus, digital zoom, smile detection, geo tagging, and panaroma and other effects. It is capable of recording HD videos of 720p quality.

The camera performance is fine, but not much impressive. The image and video quality are acceptable for casual shooters, but the lack of fine details, and amount of grain and variation in colors may disappoint the pros.

There is a 1.3 MP front facing camera too for video calling.

Memory

It has a built-in memory of 8GB, of which 5GB are available to the user. The storage can be expanded upto 32 GB using a microSD or a microSDHC card.

Connectivity

Galaxy Express supports 4G LTE network, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, microUSB 2.0, NFC, and GPS. It has a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

As said, Samsung Galaxy Express is just another Android smartphone, with all the basic features, but nothing different or exceptional. There are smartphones in this price range like SIII Mini, HTC One V, with similar specs. So, if you are looking specifically for a big screen budget Android smartphone, and you just need the basic features in a phone, then you can go for it.

Personally, I feel that Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini would be a better option. What do you think?

Built

Micromax Canvas HD looks like Canvas 2, and is somewhat inspired by the design of Samsung Galaxy S3. Canvas A116 HD has dimensions of 144x74x10.7mm, and weighs 156 grams. These dimension are large, but can be carried easily.

The front of Canvas HD is a 5 inch capacitive touchscreen display, below which are placed 3 touchscreen keys. At the top there is a 2 MP camera and a notification light. The microUSB charger and  3.5 mm audio jack are placed at the top, while the power key and the volume keys are there at the right and the left side respectively.

The back is made of glassy white plastic, with a 8 MP camera and dual LED flash at the center top.

Display

Micromax A116 Canvas HD has a huge 5 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels and 249 ppi pixel density. It supports over 16 million colors, and the display brightness and contrast is quite decent. One thing which this phone lacks in this department is a Gorilla Glass protection.

Canvas HD’s display is much better than Canvas 2, which has a WVGA display. Canvas HD certainly doesn’t have the best display, but it’s specs and performance in terms of display are more than what you would expect in this price range.

Hardware

Micromax A116 Canvas HD is powered by 1.2 GHz quad core Cortex A7 processor, and a MTK MT6589 chipset. It also comes with PowerVR Series5XT GPU, and 1 GB RAM.

Software

A116 Canvas HD runs on Android v4.1.2 aka Jelly Bean, and an upgrade to 4.2 is already planned. Most of the softwares on this phone are the stock Jelly Bean apps, but there are a few minor tweaks and replacements. Firstly, the camera app is a propriety app, and not the regular Android app. Also, the settings menu shows multicolored text.

The overall interface and user experience is clean and pleasant.

Memory

The device has a built-in memory of 4GB. However, only 1.8 GB is available, as the remaining is already used by the OS and system applications. It also supports microSD card upto 32 GB.

Camera

It has a primary camera of 8 MP quality, and 3264 x 2448 pixels resoution, which comes with a dual LED flash, auto focus, geo-tagging, face detection and touch focus. You can record HD videos of 1080p quality@ 30 frames per second. The secondary camera is of 2 MP and 720p quality.

The camera interface is a Micromax propriety app, which provides lesser features as compared to the regular Android camera app. The image and video quality are above average, but do not match the quality of other high end smartphones.

Connectivity

Canvas HD supports GPRS, EDGE, HSPDA, with max speed of 21 mbps and HSUPA with max speed of 11 mbps. It also provides supports of WLAN, wi-fi hotspot, bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0.

Battery

Micromax A116 Canvas HD has a standard Li-ion battery which has 2000 mAh capacity. It provides talktime of upto 5 hours, and stand by time of upto 154 hours.

With so many features on board, a 2000 mAh battery seems to be inadequate.

To sum up, Micromax Canvas HD is an above average smartphone, with a 5 inch high quality display, sleek design, and pretty good hardware and software. The inadequate battery life may be an issue. Also, Micromax’s after sale service and support is not the best. If you are looking for a budget Android phablet and you are willing to overlook these concerns, then go for it.

Google is working on the next release of Android operating system, which will be the fifth version, and is being developed under the name of Key Lime Pie, which conforms with Google’s convention of naming the version in Alphabetical order. Though there is no official announcement about Android 5.0 by Google, there have been rumors about it, since the launch of Jelly Bean. So, for now we can only guess what the next version of Android would look like.

A Video Chat Application

Android doesn’t have a dedicated video chat application, so people have to install a third party app like Skype for video chat. I think it’s time that Google provides a built-in video calling app, like Facetime in iOS.

Better Social Networking

Social Networking integration is usually provided by the hardware manufacturers which use Android. Some of them do a really good job, providing customized widgets and tools for social networking, but not much is provided from Google’s end. With this release, we can expect an integrated support for social networking in the OS itself.

“Never Update” option

This means that you would be able to turn off updates notifications for your installed apps. If you are willing to use the current version of the app, then you can use this option to get rid of the annoying notifications about available updates, and manually update the app, when you wish to.

I am not sure if this option will be accepted by all, because though the updating process and the notifications are annoying, most people would prefer to keep the updates versions of the apps, instead of running older versions.

Better Power Management

Android 5.0 may come with better solutions and options to optimize the device’s power, as a part of the Performance profiles discussed above. Average battery back up has always been a problem with smartphones, particularly Android. Let’s wait and see what Google has to offer in this area.

How to root Samsung Galaxy Y Duos?

Here is a simple way to root your Samsung Galaxy Y Duos. It works in recovery mode and performs the rooting in less than 3 minutes.

What will you need?

Before you get started with the process, you will need to download a zipped file. You can download it from here.

Other than this, you just need your phone and USB cable.

What steps to follow?

Just follow these steps to root your Galaxy Y Duos -

1. Copy the downloaded zipped file to your phone/phone’s SD card. Copy the file as it is, don’t unzip it.

2. Turn off your phone, and restart it in Recovery mode. To do this, press Power Home Button + Volume Up +  Power On simultaneously.
